Find out how donor sperm IVF can help make parenthood possible
Sometimes, patients need help from fertility treatments like intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) when they’re trying to conceive. In other cases, women and men might go a step further and pursue donor sperm IVF at Texas Fertility Center. Susan Hudson MD of our New Braunfels infertility clinic often uses this highly effective treatment to make parenthood possible for her patients.
How does in vitro fertilization with donated sperm work?
In vitro fertilization doesn’t change much when patients use donor sperm. The only real change is that the patient needs to first select a sperm donor. This man can be someone the patient knows (a known donor), or he can be an anonymous donor from a sperm bank. Regardless of whether you use an anonymous or a known donor, Dr. Hudson will support you every step of the way.
Using a sperm bank is a popular option for many patients. Sperm banks provide information about each donor so that intended parents know about his appearance, interests, personality and health. Donor sperm from a bank has also already undergone the necessary testing and six-month quarantine period, which means it’s immediately ready to use.
Once you’ve selected your sperm donor, your donor sperm IVF cycle at our New Braunfels infertility clinic will proceed as follows.
- You’ll first take ovarian stimulation medications and attend monitoring appointments.
- Dr. Hudson will retrieve your eggs during a short outpatient procedure.
- Our embryologists will fertilize your eggs in the lab using donor sperm.
- Dr. Hudson will transfer one of the resulting embryos to your uterus.
Keep in mind that you can opt for preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) as part of your in vitro fertilization cycle. This testing would occur after fertilization, and it can provide information about the genetic health and sex of your embryos.
Who is a good candidate for donor sperm IVF?
Many different types of patients can benefit from this treatment. In fact, Dr. Hudson commonly works with the following groups of intended parents to help them conceive using donor sperm IVF.
- Couples with female fertility issues and severe male infertility
- Lesbian couples with fertility issues or who want to pursue reciprocal IVF
- Single women with female fertility issues
