Get detailed images from a sonohysterogram
Sonohysterogram, also called saline ultrasound or saline infusion sonogram (SIS), is a special ultrasound that uses saline in the uterus to create images of the uterine lining. Our New Braunfels fertility specialists may order this test as part of a fertility evaluation because the introduction of the saline provides more detailed images of the endometrium than a traditional transvaginal ultrasound.
Gather valuable information
A sonohysterogram allows your fertility specialist to see inside the uterus to identify areas of concern.
The fertility specialist can use the images to diagnose health conditions, many of which can interfere with fertility. Afterward, the doctor may request additional imaging or develop a treatment plan.
The sonohysterogram procedure explained
First a speculum is inserted into the vagina to hold it open.
A cotton swab is used to clean the cervix before a catheter (thin tube) is passed through the vagina and cervix into the uterus, and the speculum is removed. The ultrasound transducer, a thin ultrasound “wand,” is inserted into the vagina. Sound waves generate images of the uterine lining as a small amount of sterile saline is passed into the uterus.
The best timing for saline infusion sonogram
Fertility specialist Susan Hudson, MD, advises that the most effective time in your menstrual cycle to have a sonohysterogram is after your period has ended, but before ovulation. If scheduling during that time is an issue, sometimes medications such as oral contraceptive pills can be used to keep your uterine lining thin until the time of the exam.
Saline infusion sonogram is a safe procedure that provides valuable information to patients. However, it should not be performed on women who are pregnant or have a pelvic infection.
The procedure can be done in a medical clinic or doctor’s office. A patient can return to normal activities on the same day. Post-procedure, some women experience cramping, spotting or light bleeding, or watery discharge from the saline.
If you are experiencing infertility or pregnancy loss, your fertility specialist may recommend a sonohysterogram to provide information about potential causes. If you want to discuss this option with one of our New Braunfels fertility specialists, contact Texas Fertility Center New Braunfels.
