Luteal Phase Defect

Luteal phase defect is a common causes of both infertility and miscarriage

Luteal phase defect is a disruption of the menstrual cycle that occurs during the luteal phase, the time between ovulation and the start of the menstrual cycle, when the body does not produce enough of the hormone progesterone. It is a common contributor of infertility as well as miscarriage.

The main symptoms of this disorder are short menstrual cycles. Ovulation monitoring kits that can be purchased without a prescription and used at home can help determine the length of the luteal phase. If the time between the LH surge (when you see a change in the ovulation predictor kit) and the onset of a period is shorter than 11 days, you may have a luteal phase problem. Measuring the progesterone level in blood serum is also used.

Treatments for luteal phase defect

Treatments for luteal phase defect may include ovulation induction with oral or injectable medications used in combination with progesterone injections or vaginal progesterone. When this is corrected and progesterone levels are back to normal, conception and birth rates should also return to normal.
