Causes of Infertility

Learn more about the causes of infertility from our New Braunfels fertility doctor

Susan Hudson MD, our New Braunfels fertility doctor, believes that knowledge is power when it comes to infertility. By understanding the causes of infertility, you can be an educated patient and play an active role in your fertility treatment. Not only that, you can feel empowered by this information and the knowledge that there are effective fertility treatments available to help you overcome your struggles to conceive and bring home a healthy baby.

A female factor is responsible for 40% of infertility cases, while a male factor is involved in another 40% of cases. As for the remaining 20%, these cases involve some combination of male and female infertility. For each patient, treatment will depend on the causes of infertility.

What are the causes of infertility?

Human reproduction is a complex process, and the causes of female and male infertility can vary greatly. When it comes to female infertility, some of the most common causes include ovulatory dysfunction (like polycystic ovary syndrome), damaged or blocked Fallopian tubes, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and being underweight or overweight. As for men, some common causes of male infertility include low sperm count, poor sperm quality, azoospermia (the absence of sperm in the semen) and erectile dysfunction.

Both men and women can also experience fertility issues due to age. A woman is born with all of the eggs she will ever have, and the quality and quantity of her eggs start to decrease rapidly around her mid-30s. Men also experience an age-related decline in sperm quality starting at around age 40.

Our New Braunfels fertility doctor also sometimes sees other causes of infertility, including secondary infertility and unexplained infertility. Secondary infertility occurs when a patient is unable to conceive after they have already had a baby. As for unexplained infertility, this diagnosis applies when all fertility tests have come back normal.
