Using an Egg Donor for IVF at Fertility Institute of Texas

Using an egg donor is an option for women who have few or no eggs, or who carry a genetically transmittable disease. Egg donation occurs when one woman gives her eggs to another woman for the purpose of having a baby. There are a number of reasons a couple may use an egg donor including:

  • Premature ovarian failure
  • Unsuccessful IVF due to poor egg or embryo quality
  • Fear of passing on a genetic disease
  • Reduced ovarian reserve

Selecting an egg donor

Egg donors may be anonymous or known and are usually enrolled in an egg donation program or agency. Some couples opt to find their own egg donor or to use eggs donated by a friend or family member.

The donor will be asked to complete an extensive medical history questionnaire and to submit to thorough physical and psychological exams. Egg donors are required to undergo testing for infections and sexually transmitted diseases and to ensure they are not carriers of the cystic fibrosis gene. Additional genetic testing may be required, depending on the donor’s history, ethnic background and blood type. Information about the donor’s physical appearance, level of education, hobbies and background may also be shared.

Egg donor recipients

Recipients will undergo physical and psychological exams, and they will be tested for infectious diseases and blood type. The recipient’s menstrual cycle may be synchronized with that of the donor, and hormones will be given to prepare the uterus for egg donation and continued during the early weeks of pregnancy. Once the donor eggs are retrieved, they will be fertilized. At the appropriate time, one or more embryos will be transferred to the recipient. Both egg donors and recipients should be protected by a secure legal contract.
