Third Party Reproduction at Fertility Institute of Texas

Including the use of donor eggs, donor sperm and gestational carriers

Many people choose to use aspects of third party reproduction to increase their chances of achieving pregnancy and having a healthy baby.

Donor eggs

Individuals may choose to use eggs from a donor for a variety of reasons. Most often the choice is made because the intended mother’s eggs are not of good enough quality or quantity to give a reasonable chance of pregnancy or a healthy baby on her own. There are 2 main options available when it comes to egg donation.

You may choose to use an anonymous egg donor or you may choose to use a known egg donor. Each of these has its own pros and cons, and Dr. Hudson will be happy to discuss these in detail with you. The egg donor would then go through IVF stimulation and retrieval. After retrieval, the eggs are fertilized with sperm. Resulting embryo(s) are then transferred into the uterus of the female intended parent, who will carry the baby throughout the remainder of the pregnancy.

Donor sperm

Some patients choose to use sperm from a donor. Again, the donor can be anonymous or known. Use of sperm from a sperm donor is most often chosen by women without a male partner. However, donated sperm can also be used when the male partner has had a vasectomy and chooses not to pursue IVF with a procedure called PESA (used to obtain sperm under sedation); if the male has azoospermia (no sperm); or if the male has a genetic condition that could have serious health implications for the baby. If you are going to use anonymously donated sperm, we recommend that you visit the websites of California Cryobank, Fairfax Cryobank, or European Sperm Bank.

Gestational carriers

A gestational carrier is a woman who carries a pregnancy in her uterus for another woman. A gestational carrier is often used if a woman does not have a uterus or has a medical condition that could make pregnancy unsafe for either her or the baby. Sometimes a gestational carrier can be someone you know personally, or a gestational carrier can be found through an agency.
